New EU regulations on food labeling
The European Union seeks to simplify and make more understandable the information.
The EU has just published the new regulation of the European Parliament and Council which seeks to simplify and make more understandable the information in the labeling of foods for consumers.
One change is that nutrition labeling is mandatory in order for consumers to choose a healthy balanced diet. It should include: energy, fat, saturated fatty acids, carbohydrates, proteins, sugars and salt. As a general principle, the energy value and the amount of nutrients shall be expressed per 100 grams or 100 milliliters, but additionally may be given on a proportional basis or as a percentage of recommended daily levels of these substances.
With regard to the letter of the label, establishing a minimum size depending on the size of the package, for clear and readable information. It also requires accurate, clear and easily understood by the consumer, prohibiting misleading, as suggesting the presence of a particular ingredient that has finally been replaced.
Also, mandatory labeling is extended to the country of origin of fresh pork, lamb and chicken. So far only applied to beef. Regarding drinks, those containing an alcohol volume of over 1.2%, are exempted from carrying nutritional statement and list of ingredients on the label.
